Summer winds down to you sitting in your room alone eating a turkey sandwich and cleaning out your computer. The sun is still hot yet you have worn alll of your favorites until they are merely threads of what used to be. Work will begin for me soon as dance teacher and Jessi is already up at school. Getting through the week to the weekend is all that will matter. Scarves will return, new winter coats, skinny jeans, and dark nail polish are all familiar.

So long summer, it was somethin....

jeff lipsky is pretty sweet. whether it be lauren conrad, adrian brody, or even fergilious hefself, lipsky does justice to all of the above.

as much as i wish these photos were of average folk, they still get me goin'. i learned about mr. lipsky from emjack who is embarassed to say that she spotted his talents on mtv.com (photographing the stars of "the hills", fo real). following her obsession with the ladies of LA, she also fell in love with his photographic technique.

check him out for yourself. while your favorite bloggers continue to be the first purchasers of the new barefoot wine (peach and apricot flavor - with all the bubbles of champagne!)

review

An 18 hour car ride home from a grand Disney vaycay with my boy called for a lot of time to kill. Before I left I was given The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd from my mother. Did I have any interest in reading this? The answer is no. See, over the years I have formed a terrible habit of not being able to enjoy any book that does not take place in either L.A. or New York in which the main character is a struggling fashion victim who is turned into a fashionista with a sweet life - usually written by Lauren Weisberger, Emily Giffin, and the like.

However, as the endless miles of the un-scenic Route 95 dragged, I picked up The Secret Life of Bees and indulged. I must say, I am nothing less than satisfied.

For her first book, Monk Kidd presented a truly compelling story of a young white girl, Lily, growing up in a racist 1964 area of South Carolina. She is motherless (for a very horrible reason - READ IT!), and lives with an abusive, unloving father. Lily is raised by one of her family’s former “peach pickers”, Rosaleen. When Rosaleen (who is black) pisses off the most racist men in their town by spitting her snuff spit on their shoes and getting thrown in jail, Lily comes to her rescue and they are on a runaway journey to a location Lily picked for reasons close to her. Her goal=learning about her mother. Rosaleen’s goal=avoiding the law. Ending up in Tiburon, South Carolina, they meet 3 remarkable black sisters and learn a lot about life, love, and Lily’s mother.

To tell you anything else would be giving away what makes the story so special. This book was certainly out of the ordinary for me, and I never would have bought it on my own. I really appreciate the fact that I read something outside of my fantasy world ( oh - and the movie version is coming out in October!). If you are like me, try to open your mind. There are so many good books out there and so much to be learned, mostly about yourself, by reading them.

Em, myself, and some of our closest friends will be swapping books all summer. So far, it has worked out really well. I have read Into the Wild and can’t stop googling Christopher McCandless and his story. Books can truly open your mind and heart. I feel that The Secret Life of Bees softened me to being able to know about what true heartbreak and struggle is and appreciate my life that much more. So, to you I say go to Barnes and Noble, skip over the books with pale pink colors with cool artwork and pick up that book with simply a title and pages. It will change you.

we need your thoughts.

i'm all about this american apparel suit.
it gives emily stink face.
we want to know your thoughts.

suit hunting - give us advice!!

5.07.2008

almost done.

we've been slacking. it's finals week. nuff said. summer starts for me as of 730 pm tonight! until then i am going to go back to studying with the promise that e-rose will be making a comeback as of this weekend.

things to look forward to:
one very delayed review of the feist show

until then, you should do what i do when i'm studying...and that's find random websites out of boredom. this one isn't so random, but if you're bored...there's no better site to visit.
http://www.thehungersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=1

all you have to do is click and for every time you click you are helping to donate food to the hungry. it's absoltely free. they are able to do this because each time you click, they display ad's from their sponsors. all the money they make from the advertisters goes straight to charities who are involved with feeding the hungry. makes you feel like you did something worthwhile with time that you spend clicking around on other sites anyway.

also - let's all make a pact. em and i decided that this we will start to love our bodies and no longer take 2 hours to get ready beacuse we can't stop looking in the mirror and complaining. we should be so lucky that image is our biggest problem. life's way too short for the way that we've been living. time for change. let's all do it.

happy humpday folks. i'll get back at you soon.

good things to start your week with

I would like this bag. For summer (which is a week away for me!!). I think it would be grand for the beach and for working in the city. However, right now I am as broke as they come. I need to find a paying job to make up for my lack of pay in my internship this summer. So, I've been applying to every and any store I could think of. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

But in the meanwhile, I shall post my latest fave summer Betseyville in hopes that my boyfriend will visit the site, as he usually does, and maybe get the hint. Just joking, I am not one of those girls!

I think it's a sweet bag and in the perfect size for me (she also has it available in about 7 other styles including a cosmetic case and a wallet.
I will leave you folks with this..2 days until we see this lovely lady!

Toms: Shoes for Tomorrow

I have recently found out about this :
My dear friend Emily kept talking about these sneakers she was going to get her brother for his birthday. After pretending to know what she was talking about for a while, I finally asked.

Toms is a Santa Monica based shoe company that produces some sweet Argentine inspired canvas slip ons. For every pair you buy, they donate a pair to a child in need. I think its pretty damn sweet, and they aren't terrible looking. I would feel like a beautiful good giving Pocohontas. I say we support and all get a lil pair of these puppies. They also have some sweet t's and bags!

There is also a chance for you to go on a trip to drop off the shoes to the children. Check it here.

Thanks Tom for being so great!

Happy Earth Day!

Today is Earth Day

Its the day for us to thank her and show her we care. With out sounding too hippie I would like to encourage us all to step outside and look around. Pick up the piece of garbage on the ground, take the bus, turn off your light before leaving, and respect our planet : )

I think it's important to educate ourselves on whats happening out there, and why going green is such a big deal. Check these out:

Stop Global Warming Virtual March

what are you doing on this lovely day? let us know.

4.08.2008

do a good deed in return for the sun.

Just came in from my balcony overlooking the Hudson where I soaked in the rays and painted my nails a grand shade of plum. What a lovely day! I am finally starting to get my life more and more in order. Only 3 more Mondays until summer . . . that's my motivation. 3 more painful weeks - then it's summer nights, after work drinks, beach as often as we can squeeze it in, hanging in my purple room with my most wonderful friends, going to F21 for sun dresses for any and every occasion, fighting over who gets the R or L side of the shared headphone set on the beach according to which ear has Flea's sweet as hell chords in it..yea it's almost that time.

However, as I sit here enjoying Jimmy Eat World's Chase This Light album that I am listening to for the first time (minus the singles of course) courtesy of EmJack circa 10pm last night, I am also reading up on probably one of the most awesome causes I have ever heard of.

It's called COTTON. FROM BLUE TO GREEN.™ and their motto is to "Change the world one pair of jeans at a time". Basically - they collect donated jeans, turn them into their pure form of cotton, and use this as an all-natural home insullation. They have used it to rebuild and improve on many homes, especially those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
FROM THIS
TO THIS

The only downside is that they have been doing denim drives at colleges since 2006, and unfortunately none of them have been in our area (NY/NJ). The good news is that since last fall they have began to work their "tour" to the east coast, so east coasters - start saving your old denim.

Check out http://www.accesscotton.com/. You can learn a little bit more about the cause, play games, find out about the tour, scope videos, and see how you can do your part!

The beauty is in what you make it,
So get up on your feet.
