When my dear friend Melissa had to venture to the Museum of Sex in NYC for a class, I couldn't refuse the offer to join her. Besides wanting to see my friend, I also was very intrigued at what such a museum would show. It turned out to not really be what I expected. Not in a bad way though. I went to the museum thinking that it would be more informative and educational - not about sex in general, but more about the history of sex. It turned out that it was a little raunchy, yet interesting. There were 3 main exhibits - Sex in Design/Design in Sex, ACTION (Sex and the Moving Image), and SPOTLIGHT (on the Permanent Collection). Sex in Design/Design in Sex showed how advertisers use sex in numerous ways. It also showed the most basic "sex toys", if you will (vibrators, flavored condoms, etc.) and how their design has changed over the years. ACTION was a history of porn. It was a dark room, lined with video screens, each playing porn footage. All types of porn (old porn, celebrity porn, raunchy porn, cartoon porn, same sex porn, porn in movies, burlesque, etc.) I can't say that I wasn't uncomfortable in a dark room with all different types of people watching Paris Hilton do the dirty. There was eve a "mini theater" with informational videos on how to perform oral sex. A group of middle-aged men watching that behind a row of high-school-aged girls was not exactly what I had in mind for my trip to the museum. And last but not least was SPOTLIGHT - sex dolls, sex contraptions, wearable female parts for men, dominatrix gear, etc. Overall, the sex museum was a unique experience. Call me immature, but I couldn't make it through without a few chuckles. But hey, to each his own. Peep the pics:
