With friends G. Love, Ben Harper, Matt Costa, and Kawika Kahiapo, Jack has created something that is exactly what the doctor ordered. (If your ordering music to teach dance to [that is not Hannah Montana]). In my searches make modern dance appealing to third graders I stumbled upon jewel. I, of course, am late of the boat. Coming out early in 2006, somewhere when In Between Dreams blessed my ears....this has made better the little bit of a drab taste in my mouth after Sleeping Through the Static. It was Jack in his very best. Hippie dippie wonders like 3 R's and The Sharing Song teach little tykes good things about recycling and being nice to your friends. Not only will I use it with my little dancin toes, but for my very own pleasure.

Myself being a fan of New Yawk, I have never been a dabbler in Philly. Although I hear from a little birdie that this man is amazing. Isaiah Zagar. A fella with a long white beard who creates beautiful murals through out the city. There is a documentary a brewin about his life called In A Dream. Even though I never even heard of this guy, or seen any of his work...after I saw the trailor I am compelled to see the documentary. Nothing like a good little movie to get you off your ass and do what you want I think. We all need that, and I feel like that is what this will deliver.

I am a huge fan of this movie, sometimes I think I may be the only one, but the soundtrack stole my heart and ears. All done by a little fellow named Sondre Lerche with a short visit from your friend and mine; Regina Spektor. I am a stupid hippie idiot that enjoys a man strumming on the guitar and singing diddies about love. My most very favorite is a tune by the name of My Hands Are Shakin....the lyrics are by far the most wonderful and profile worthy if ur feelin some love. And lets not forget the cover of "Let My Love Open the Door"

Perhaps a couple months ago, you watched the "5 Years Time" video I posted. I exclaimed at how you could not be not happy whilst watching. And it is the truest information I think I ever did speak. Well, upon doing my favorite past time (stealing music from digital dreams) I have acquired Noah and the Whale; Peaceful, The World Lays Me Down. It is an incredible group of songs by the same men that had made me so very happy on a hot summer day. My very favorite is Give A Little Love. Doug Fink, Charlie Fink, Tom Hobden and Matt Owens deliver the album that I put on while I may be feeling a little bit down, it will give you that lift that we all sometimes need.

I sat in a cafe on 2nd avenue with a cold breeze coming through the door. After ordering my turkey and cheese on ciabatta bread, I put my phone down to notice the lovely music entering my ears. Maybe it sounded good because my food was good. Maybe it sounded good because it was a perfect autumn day...or it just made me feel good. I asked the man behind the counter who was singing to me....The Avett Brothers. Go to their site...it is probably the most beautiful band bio anyone could read.

Should I spend that much money that I don't have on music? should I? should I? Yes Oh lord yes.

On a cool autumn Monday evening, my newly engaged sister and I trucked through the crowded rush hour streets towards 50th and 6th. After a couple of blue moons and a turkey burger at Connollys on 47th we were on our way to a glorious evening of music. We walked into the beautiful venue packed of people and down into our seats. RR in orchestra...they were glorious. St. Vincent opened which was a pleasant suprise. Her brown curly locks bounced about as she slammed the pedals for her guitar and sang her sweet heart out.

We both decided the greatest time to get a tshirt would be after she plays. So off we frolicked to wait on line. I made some conversation with some broad and a cool purse...on to some dumb b who didnt like that I asked her what size she got. I didnt mean to be rude...only curious. Any ways, I got a sweet purple (so hot right now) one and Anna walked away with the Narrow Stairs cover slapped on an american apparell.

Lovely bathrooms also I may throw in there.

The men took the stage. The wonderful Ben Gibbard swayed back and forth in his flannel shirt and did all of the songs justice. Giving a shout out to the show that was stopped in June because of high winds, he dedicated I Will Follow You Into the Dark to those folk (me). Crooked Teeth, Sound of Settling, I Will Possess your Heart, New Year all gave me chills.

All Anna wanted to hear was Move Script Ending....when will they play this lovely little diddy!? Well they burst back on stage for their encore singing that sweet tune. Ending the whole damn thing with Transatlanticism. Singing softly the haunting lyrics of "I Need You So much closer" they pounded the drums and the lights flashed like crazy....

Glorious.

Betsey Johnson Spring 2009

This post is slacking as far as time is concerned. Busiest human this semester. But, it's ok. While I intern on Mondays Wednesdays and Thursdays, a hellish commute to the city from Marist, I sometimes get graced with the presence of Emily or Dave for lunch hours. Helps me get through the week while staying sane. This past Tuesday - however - I volunteered for the Betsey Johnson show in Bryant Park.

I've been trying to be assigned the Betsey shift since freshman year. And now, my time has finally come. Where can I even begin?

I walked into The Tent around 12 on Tuesday the 9th, to be hit in the face with bright blues, deep reds, clown prints, star prints, cafe tables. Every color-combo and design feature that you would not find at any other designer's show was right there spilling all over the Betsey Johnson runway. The backdrop was a collage of all different types of clowns complete with a pink neon lit Betsey Johnson signature sign.

Through red paned doors the models were lead to the runway, which looked like a pair of childhood pajamas, bright blue with bright, big yellow stars. The front row was not really the front row because in front of it were lined, red cafe tables with table cloths matching the runway. Four seats per table, and on each table were 2 cupcakes (B and J), 4 lollipops, Betsey-themed plates and napkins and blue gift bags galore. I was beyond excited.

And then there she was. As I was placing my last gift bag on a guest's chair, I turned around to find this itty bitty woman dressed in all black with killer heels and the blondest of blonde hair you ever did see. Betsey is just so lively. So full of emotions and expressions. She doesn't see herself as higher or better than anyone, as she was doing her part in the show just as everyone else was. She was up in the DJ booth prior to the show reviewing the music with the DJ, which ranged from crazy techno to songs from Sesame Street, as she dance and clapped and smiled to big with that bright red mouth of hers. It was basically a cracked-out childhood themed show. And I loved it.

As we continued to set up for what was to be an amazing show, in walks Kelly Osbourne. Looking good I might add. With the lead singer of Evanesence (which I would later find out). Also present were Run's kids, one of whom is def dating Lil Bow Wow (who ain't lying about being LIL). And then, the show began. Betsey opened by carrying out her 2 granddaughters and balloons to her daugher Lulu and the rest of the Johnson clan sitting at one of the cafe tables.

Then, bursting through the red doors came victorian silhouettes complete with hoopskirts, ruffles, pastels, paisley prints, top hats, layers, petti-coat looking with accentuated shoulders. The BJ Spring '09 look was starting to seem like a crazy twist on some very basic silhouettes. Not to mention the models purple, blue and pink wigs.

Then the show transitioned into all whites. See-through floor-length dresses, ruffles galore, itty-bitty sunglasses, causal silks and modern lace. It was rock star meets prarie virgin. It was awesome.

Then Betsey showed yet again how her show is not like any other. A man dressed as a pirate came out and messed with the models as well as threw out fake gold coins as the garments transitioned right from white to black. In between the fake pirate nearly tripping the models to death with the runway full of gold coins, there were silhouettes similar to the white section, but black, and feel was totally different, dark, mysterious, and fun. The garments slowly became more and more full of life as traditional and classic Betsey prints, flowers, and loudness came about and the music went from slow to very fast paced. There were dresses with her famous rose print, bright leggings, flowing dresses. Everything gave the feel of vibrancy and lightness.

The show's end was amazing. A showcase of 7 different Betsey Johnson-styled wedding gowns. The "brides" came down the runway with their hands handcuffed behind their backs as a wedding song played. So clever and artistic.
Then Betsey came out. Dressed in an serious Emerald tutu dress and doing her infamous, perfect cartwheel into a split. The show ended with the models dancing up and down the runway holding balloons of ducks, sheep, cows, etc. That's Betsey, love her!

I must say. This book gathered dust for weeks before I liked it. I bitched about the no chapters, and how I had no idea what I was going on. (honest) Until the second I was left to catch a train ride with nothing to read, searching my room I grabbed the first thing I saw....VELOCITY!

I have not put it down since. I urge you to read past the not typically chaptered book (it goes by days, not numbers). Get lost in Will's head, deal with Hands' stories, and remember Jack. The two friends ,Will and Hand, find themselves on a week long escapade in which they only wish to give away money. Money that Will stumbled upon and felt was completely useless to him. Taping it to donkeys and leaving envelopes on huts in Senegal, swimming in the waters at 1 am, Casablanca, and painful memories of their childhood friend have me intensely reading this book that took me so long to appreciate. Once again Dave Eggers has made my reading experience pleasurable. I am a true fan.

The nights are getting cooler, days are shorter, but its ok. Autumn approaches.

The sun is still hot yet you have worn alll of your favorites until they are merely threads of what used to be. Work will begin for me soon as dance teacher and Jessi is already up at school. Getting through the week to the weekend is all that will matter. Scarves will return, new winter coats, skinny jeans, and dark nail polish are all familiar.

jeff lipsky is pretty sweet. whether it be lauren conrad, adrian brody, or even fergilious hefself, lipsky does justice to all of the above.

as much as i wish these photos were of average folk,they still get me goin'. i learned about mr. lipsky from emjack who is embarassed to say that she spotted his talents on mtv.com (photographing the stars of "the hills", fo real). following her obsession with the ladies of LA, she also fell in love with his photographic technique.

A weekend filled with fun, music, and sweat. the weekend will kicks off on Friday with a performance by Everclear! Saturday morning get healthy with a 5K race called the Rock and Run. Your little jog is supporting children with cancer, blood disorders, and global cancer. It makes it triple the better when it is for a good cause if you ask me. Following the run the music begins. Saturday line up includes Gin Blossoms, Tokyo Police Club, and the B52's among others!

Straight outta jacksonville, fl - Black Kids are the new sweetest thing to hit our ears. Kinda mellow, kinda pop-ish, 90's beaths, really fun. Boys AND Girls. Black AND White. Perfection!

Their debut album - partie traumatic - came out just last Tuesday. You may have heard their single "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You" on airwaves since this past April. I would describe this song as sweet/though not unique voices over a beyond catchy beat that you will be tapping at your desk all day while you hum over and over "I'm not gonna teach him how to dance with you". The song is not one of their best - but it is an undeniable hit. They areMGMT-ish in the sense that even if you do not want to like them, you will. And you will a lot.

Peep "Hurricane Jane" - one of my favs. The beat is so 90's you will picture your mom snapping to it as she drives you and your friends who are in the backseat to the pool when you were 8. Which makes it that much more awesome.

Owen, Kevin, Dawn, Ali and Reggie are currently touring both the US and UK. However - unless you're willing to travel out of the NJ/NY - then you won't be seeing them for a while. However you can catch them in Philly at the end of September. Which is cool, gives you more time to grow to love them.

Black Kids recently toured with Kate Nash and I found a vid of a live collaboration of "I'm Not Gonna Teach...." Check it!

to see mgmt at mccarren this past sunrday.
after some drinks and lots of having to pee..we approached the park only to follow the line for blocks and find it stretching from mccarren to basically under the bqe.
and for anyone who knows this distance - feel free to gag right about now.
being at the end of the line in a downpour..my love for mgmt began to be pushed to the side by my yearning for shelter and a couch and/or toilet.

i must say i was looking forward to this all summer but sometimes it's better to just hear glimpses of the soundcheck while you walk to the bar rather then stand in the hipster line from hell. check it out:

I swear the first time I heard this album the chills on my arms and legs lasted about 45 minutes. With my hand over my heart I listend as the notes and lyrics touched my heart like I have never ever have experienced.

I am about to get so woman. (so please be prepared). While retreating to a cabin deep into Wisconsin, Justin Vernon recorded most of what we know as For Emma, Forever Ago. I was creeping along the daytrotter website when I came across a project by a name I was unfamiliar with. With my never ending search for new tunes to fill my room with I searched this band on itunes...and instantly purchased it. I listened to the album 3 times in a row as I simply sat on my bed. I sat there whole heartedly and it felt like the world had stopped. It was everything I wanted at this moment in my life, it filled me up and made me feel whole.

Lyrics and melody will cause your heart to skip a beat and you won't have any qualms with it. Please do check it out. Key tracks you ask? Skinny love, Blindsided, The Wolves, Flume...

I have recently become obsessed with a little band called the Hold Steady. Reigning from Brooklyn, New York, this group of talented men have quite the prize on their hands. Bobby Drake, Craig Finn, Tad Kuble, Franz Nicolay Galen Polivka do a great thing.Their album, Stay Positive, released June 17, 2008 has become one of my favorites. A voice (dare I say reminds me closely to one of the greatest.....Bruce). Something that is new in the most classic rock type of way has my ears paying the most attention than it has paid in quite a while. Songs like "Sequestered in Memphis", and "Stay Positive" have you looking up the lyrics all the while hitting repeat on your old school cd player.I may be late on the Hold Steady bus, but it is still a worth while purchase. Hit up that 9.99 and purchase that sucker on itunes.

Lets appreciate a wonderful thing. Postal Service will take you back to your dorm room in late 2003 when your life is changing before your eyes. You are growing into a person who is only a part of who you are now....5 years later. I can remember the "Dont wake me I plan on sleeping" away messages on the desk top Dell that had a sticky keyboard due to the cheap drinks that were spilled on it every Thursday night. I appreciate this album for all its worth. Sounds, feelings attached, voices, and memories.

A calming voice accompanied by electronic beats, Ben,and haunting back up vocals. I shall name this my favorite.

Perusing the aisles of Barnes and Noble, I found something way better then a book to read. A good friend sitting in the cafe. With my giving up on picking out a book for myself I gave my reading rights over to him. Trusting him with my whole being, I ask him what to read. He gets up leaves me in the cafe and returns with this.

The Book of Secrets by Deepak Chopra

I was feeling like I needed a spiritual lift. The secrets give you a lift, all the while feeling so grounded. Only half way through I am enjoyin immensely new facts, views, and feelings. Sometimes you just need to step out of what your feeling and see it from all sides to know that you will be ok. Thank you Deepak.

I went to the beach last Saturday and experienced something I thought could never happen to me. Sunburned lips. Laugh my friends but it hurts like you would not believe. I could not eat without using a fork to insert the food past my lips, cause well if they touched my lips it would sting for about 10 minutes. If it has happened to you, I'm sorry. Sucks so bad. I am stubborn and think that I can't get burned and I especially never thought SPF for your lips was necessary. However, I found something very wonderful today on style.com. It is called The Balm - BalmShelter Lip Gloss.

I myself am not a chapstick kind of girl. I appreciate my gloss. This balm comes in 12 neutral colors and is SPF 17! 17! That's a lot of SPF. It is available at Sephora for $18 and I think that I will be making this purchase. I never wish burned lips upon anyone.

I am reccommeding all you girls make this purchase. I know my best friends love their gloss.

An 18 hour car ride home from a grand Disney vaycay with my boy called for a lot of time to kill. Before I left I was given The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd from my mother. Did I have any interest in reading this? The answer is no. See, over the years I have formed a terrible habit of not being able to enjoy any book that does not take place in either L.A. or New York in which the main character is a struggling fashion victim who is turned into a fashionista with a sweet life - usually written by Lauren Weisberger, Emily Giffin, and the like.

However, as the endless miles of the un-scenic Route 95 dragged, I picked up The Secret Life of Bees and indulged. I must say, I am nothing less than satisfied.

For her first book, Monk Kidd presented a truly compelling story of a young white girl, Lily, growing up in a racist 1964 area of South Carolina. She is motherless (for a very horrible reason - READ IT!), and lives with an abusive, unloving father. Lily is raised by one of her family’s former “peach pickers”, Rosaleen. When Rosaleen (who is black) pisses off the most racist men in their town by spitting her snuff spit on their shoes and getting thrown in jail, Lily comes to her rescue and they are on a runaway journey to a location Lily picked for reasons close to her. Her goal=learning about her mother. Rosaleen’s goal=avoiding the law. Ending up in Tiburon, South Carolina, they meet 3 remarkable black sisters and learn a lot about life, love, and Lily’s mother.

To tell you anything else would be giving away what makes the story so special. This book was certainly out of the ordinary for me, and I never would have bought it on my own. I really appreciate the fact that I read something outside of my fantasy world ( oh - and the movie version is coming out in October!). If you are like me, try to open your mind. There are so many good books out there and so much to be learned, mostly about yourself, by reading them.

Em, myself, and some of our closest friends will be swapping books all summer. So far, it has worked out really well. I have read Into the Wild and can’t stop googling Christopher McCandless and his story. Books can truly open your mind and heart. I feel that The Secret Life of Bees softened me to being able to know about what true heartbreak and struggle is and appreciate my life that much more. So, to you I say go to Barnes and Noble, skip over the books with pale pink colors with cool artwork and pick up that book with simply a title and pages. It will change you.
